OCTOBER WAS THE BUSIEST MONTH SO FAR IN THE 2014 ATLANTIC
HURRICANE SEASON. THREE TROPICAL CYCLONES FORMED IN THE ATLANTIC
BASIN AND TWO OF THESE BECAME HURRICANES…WITH GONZALO REACHING
MAJOR HURRICANE STRENGTH. BASED ON A 30-YEAR (1981-2010)
CLIMATOLOGY…TWO NAMED STORMS TYPICALLY FORM IN THE BASIN IN
OCTOBER…WITH ONE BECOMING A HURRICANE. A MAJOR HURRICANE FORMS IN
OCTOBER ABOUT ONCE EVERY OTHER YEAR.

IN TERMS OF ACCUMULATED CYCLONE ENERGY…WHICH MEASURES THE COMBINED
STRENGTH AND DURATION OF TROPICAL STORMS AND HURRICANES…ACTIVITY
IN THE BASIN SO FAR IN 2014 HAS BEEN ABOUT 67 PERCENT OF THE
1981-2010 AVERAGE.
